Nigeria’s male handball team secured a bronze medal at the 13th African Games in Accra, Ghana, after defeating Benin Republic 38-20 in the third-place match.

The team, nicknamed Golden Arrows, fell short of the gold medal opportunity after losing to DR Congo in the semi-finals. However, they displayed determination and skill to clinch bronze, marking their first podium finish since the Abuja 2003 Games.

Executing their game plan with precision, the team showcased superior performance with fewer turnovers, increased scoring from the wings, and solid defensive play.

Coach Rafiu Salami expressed gratitude to the team for their commendable performance, emphasizing their resilience in securing a medal.

Samuel Ocheho, President of the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN), applauded the team’s achievement, emphasizing their target to secure a medal in the event. He expressed confidence in the team’s future dominance in continental competitions.

With this victory, Nigeria’s handball team now boasts a total of four medals in African Games history, adding to their previous bronze medals in Cairo 1991, Harare 1995, Abuja 2003, and now Accra 2024.

The 13th African Games, which commenced on March 8, are set to conclude on March 13 in Accra, Ghana.
