The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has denounced the abduction of students in Kebbi State, calling on the Federal Government to urgently address the country’s worsening security situation.

NLC President Joe Ajaero, in a statement issued Tuesday in Abuja, described the incident as deeply alarming, particularly in a state long regarded for its proactive security measures and consistent social welfare interventions.

“This abduction is a painful reminder that insecurity is far from over,” Ajaero said. “Kebbi has enjoyed relative stability due to regular payment of salaries, pensions and visible infrastructural development, making this attack even more troubling.”

He said the ease with which the attackers operated suggests “something more sinister” and demonstrates the urgent need to rethink Nigeria’s current security strategy.

Ajaero recalled the unresolved trauma of the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction, noting that earlier promises to prevent a recurrence had clearly not been fulfilled. “We said it would never happen again, yet here we are,” he said.

He appealed for collective support for Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris as authorities and affected families grapple with the emotional and psychological toll of the incident.

“The governor needs all the support he can get at this point,” Ajaero added.

The labour leader urged the Federal Government to scale up efforts to secure the country’s vast landmass, saying current budgetary allocations to security have not delivered meaningful improvements.

He warned that shrinking physical and psychological spaces across the country should concern every citizen, adding that states currently under attack may not be the only ones at risk if urgent action is not taken.
