In a bid to tackle the pressing issue of unemployment in Nigeria, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yusha’u Dogara Ahmed, has called upon Corps Members to embrace vocational training through the Scheme’s Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme.

According to a statement released on Monday by Eddy Megwa, the NYSC Director of Press and Public Relations, Ahmed emphasized that skill acquisition is the key remedy to the unemployment crisis plaguing the nation.

The Director General made these remarks while addressing Corps Members at the Katsina State Orientation Camp and the NYSC Borno State Orientation Camp.

Furthermore, the NYSC DG stressed the importance of in-camp training for all Corps Members, aimed at exposing them to entrepreneurship during their three-week Orientation period.

Make the most of SAED, learn from it, and tap into your potential to attain financial independence and establish your own businesses,” Ahmed asserted.

He went on to explain that the post-camp training phase would enable Corps Members to fully refine their acquired skills and pave the way for self-employment.

The Director General also issued a stern warning regarding the NYSC dress code, cautioning Corps Members that non-compliance would not be tolerated.

The days of improper dressing are over. Dress appropriately at all times, as inappropriate attire will be met with consequences. Failure to adhere to the dress code will result in restricted access to our offices,” he firmly stated.

Ahmed further encouraged Corps Members to actively engage in camp activities and make the most of the four cardinal programs of the Scheme: Orientation Course, Primary Assignment, Community Development Service, and Winding-Up/Passing-Out.

These avenues present opportunities to forge strong bonds and leave a positive impact on their host communities.

Giving a rundown of the situation on the ground, the NYSC Katsina State Coordinator, Mrs. Aisha Muhammad, reported that all 1,129 registered Corps Members—comprising 551 males and 578 females—have seamlessly adapted to their new environment and are in high spirits.

Likewise, the NYSC Borno State Coordinator, Mr. Mohammed Adamu Jiya, lauded the effective teamwork among all camp officials, contributing to the smooth progress of Orientation Camp activities.

Nigerian youths have a vital role to play in shaping the country’s future, and the NYSC’s efforts to equip them with valuable skills and opportunities for self-reliance are crucial steps in this direction.
