The crisis rocking the Ondo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has deepened following the resignation of its Director of Media and Publicity, Leye Igbabo, just 72 hours after the party’s state congress.

At the congress held in Akure over the weekend, former council chairman Hon. Dupe Aisida was elected as state chairman alongside other new executives. Aisida had urged members to put aside past divisions and rebuild the party’s unity.

But in a resignation letter addressed to the new chairman, Igbabo said the party had become “hostile to effective and efficient performance” of his duties.

“It is disheartening to know that the Secretariat has become hostile to effective and efficient performance of my duties as Director of Media and Publicity,” he wrote. “I note with pains, utter deceit, huge compromise and gross indiscipline. There is no more sincerity of purpose, and under such circumstances, I do not want to be labeled as an incompetent official.”

Describing the PDP in Ondo as an “unproductive environment,” Igbabo said staying would amount to a waste of time and energy.

His exit follows that of Kennedy Peretei, the party’s former Publicity Secretary, who quit months ago, declaring the party had moved “from the intensive-care unit to the morgue.”

Peretei, who previously served as the state’s Financial Secretary and later Publicity Secretary, accused entrenched leaders of holding the PDP hostage and prioritising personal gain over electoral success.

“The same people who have made it impossible to win elections in the last three cycles have tightened their grip,” he said at the time. “The PDP in Ondo State is now on its way to the morgue.”

The back-to-back resignations underscore mounting disarray within the opposition party as it struggles to rebuild ahead of future elections.
