A video circulating online has sparked outrage after showing armed vigilantes storming a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) lodge in Anambra State and violently assaulting corps members.
The footage, released on Monday by the Haven 360 Foundation, shows one of the victims, Jennifer Edema Elohor, being beaten and stripped naked by members of Operation Udo Ga-Achi, also known as the Agunechemba Vigilante Group.
According to the foundation, the corps members were subjected to severe beatings, threats of sexual assault, and degrading treatment. The vigilantes reportedly accused them of internet fraud — commonly called “yahoo yahoo” — even after the corps members produced their NYSC identity cards.
“The assault was particularly egregious in the case of Jennifer Edema Elohor, who was beaten, stripped naked, and left exposed and covered in blood,” Haven 360 said in its statement. “The victims were subjected to unsavoury, horrible, sexually degrading words and actions, including threats of sexual violation.”
The foundation condemned the attack as a grave violation of rights and called for accountability, describing it as an assault not only on the victims but on the dignity of the NYSC programme itself.
Authorities in Anambra State have yet to issue a statement on the incident.
