There was panic in Ijebu-Jesa, headquarters of Oriade Local Government Area of Osun State, on Saturday after a podium collapsed during the inauguration of vote canvassers for Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election campaign.
The event, organised by Mr. Pelumi Olajengbesi, was attended by the governor, his sister Modupe Adeleke-Sanni and other dignitaries.
The incident occurred midway through the programme when Adeleke was invited to acknowledge supporters. As he stood to greet the crowd, several dignitaries moved toward him on the podium, adding to the weight on the structure.
Witnesses said the already crowded podium eventually gave way and collapsed, triggering confusion among attendees.
Party members and supporters briefly expressed concern over the governor’s safety, but no fatalities were recorded.
Some members and officials of the Accord Party reportedly sustained minor injuries in the incident.
The programme was brought to an early end following the collapse.
