The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Representatives members-elect have spoken out against the tradition of zoning for leadership positions in the National Assembly, stating that competence, efficiency, and suitability should be the determining factors.

At a strategic meeting of the Northern Caucus of the PDP Members-elect, they emphasized the need for a capable and experienced legislative leadership to ensure effective policy initiation and execution.

In a communique signed by seven members, the legislators cautioned political parties to prioritize the needs of the nation and avoid creating a lame duck National Assembly in the hands of the executive arm of government.

They urged themselves to work together to ensure that competent individuals are elected or appointed to occupy the leadership positions of the lower chamber of the apex legislature.

Former deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Senator Usman Bayero Nafada, who chaired the event, congratulated the Members-elect and stressed the importance of unity in achieving legislative success and performance.

The meeting was well attended by almost all the PDP Northern Caucus members, who expressed their commitment to working together with other minority members to ensure that eligibility, competence, and merit take precedence in the choice of the leadership of the 10th assembly.
