The Edo State Police Command has issued invitations to several individuals linked to the shooting incident that occurred last Thursday on Airport Road. The incident involved the reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Sen. Monday Okpebholo. The shooting resulted in the death of Okpebholo’s police orderly.
In addition to investigating the shooting, the police have extended an apology to Sen. Okpebholo for an earlier reference to him as “one Monday,” a term deemed disrespectful. Commissioner of Police Funsho Adebgoye acknowledged the mistake and emphasized that it was not reflective of the police’s respect for Okpebholo’s position as a serving senator and APC gubernatorial candidate.
The shooting has heightened tensions among the state government, the APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with accusations flying about who was responsible. The PDP and the state government have alleged that Shaibu orchestrated the attack and have called for a thorough investigation.
Commissioner Adebgoye confirmed that some suspects have moved from their known addresses. The police have issued invitations to their relatives and warned that failure to respond could result in the suspects being declared wanted. Adebgoye assured that the investigation is ongoing and all necessary legal actions will be pursued.
He concluded by reiterating the police’s respect for Okpebholo and apologizing for any inadvertent offense caused by the earlier reference.
