The Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Ikoyi, has launched an investigation into allegations of extortion, intimidation, and unprofessional conduct levelled against one of its officers by a Lagos-based couple, Mr. and Mrs. Chidi Mitchell Onyiah.

The probe follows a petition to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, filed through the couple’s lawyer, Savn Daniel of Otung, Okoh & Co. Chambers. In the petition, the couple alleged that their ordeal began in July 2023 after purchasing a property at 2 Salami Street, Olodi-Apapa, Lagos, from one Mr. Sulaiman Ojora. They said the sale was properly documented and recorded on video, with all parties signing a deed of assignment.

According to them, conflict arose shortly after the transaction when a politician reportedly expressed interest in the same property. Despite claiming to have purchased the property through an accredited agent and in the presence of witnesses, the couple said they began receiving threats contesting their ownership. The case was later reported to the FCID Annex, where an officer was assigned to handle the dispute.

However, the couple alleged that the officer began to harass and intimidate them rather than mediate the matter — and even detained another individual who had issued them a conveyance letter. Their lawyer further claimed that the intimidation escalated into threats of false criminal allegations linking the couple to the death of one of the parties involved in the dispute.

When contacted, FCID Annex spokesperson ASP Aminat Mayegun confirmed awareness of the petition, saying the officer in question had denied the allegations.

“The couple also petitioned him at the X-Squad, and he provided his statement, but they failed to appear,” Mayegun said. “Nonetheless, we are open to hearing from all sides to ensure fairness. If any officer is found guilty of misconduct, appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken.”

She added that the department remains committed to justice and to upholding the Inspector-General’s directive on professionalism and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force.
