President Muhammadu Buhari, a retired Major General, has given his assent to two bills passed by the National Assembly, according to a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters.

The bills are the Copyright Act 2022 and the Federal College of Medical Laboratory Science and Technology Jos Act 2023.

The Copyright Act repeals the previous Copyright Act, Cap C28, and replaces it with updated provisions to regulate, protect, and administer copyright, with particular attention paid to the digital age.

The Federal College of Medical Laboratory Science and Technology Jos Act replaces the Federal School of Medical Laboratory Science, Jos (Establishment) Act, 2018, and restructures the institution to align with current democratic principles and existing educational institutions.

Additionally, on the same day, Buhari signed 16 of the 35 bills seeking to amend various parts of the 1999 Constitution, which were passed by the National Assembly and concurred with by the required number of state Houses of Assembly.

These bills aim to devolve powers from the Federal Government to the states and transfer some items from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent List in the Constitution.
