Rev. Father Hyacinth Iormem Alia, born on May 15, 1966, has taken a unique path, transitioning from priesthood to politics. Serving as the governor of Benue State since May 29, 2023, he is the second cleric to hold such a position in the state after the late Very Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu during the botched Third Republic.

His decision to enter politics was driven by a desire to address the numerous challenges facing the state, particularly the neglect of the poor masses and the dysfunctional state of infrastructure. Having spent 33 years as a priest working closely with the people, he felt a strong sense of responsibility to improve their lives and ensure the state’s development.

Rev. Alia’s educational background includes studies in religious studies, theology, and biomedical ethics, culminating in a doctorate from Duquesne University in Pennsylvania. His extensive education and experience provided him with the tools to navigate the complexities of governance.

In his inaugural speech, Rev. Alia vowed to transform the state, declaring a state of emergency on infrastructure and taking decisive actions to address issues such as ghost schools and workers. Under his leadership, significant progress has been made in areas such as road construction and tackling corruption in the civil service.

Despite facing opposition from some quarters, Rev. Alia remains committed to his vision for the state, emphasizing the importance of serving the people and prioritizing their needs over political interests. He maintains a positive relationship with key figures like the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and is focused on delivering tangible results for the people of Benue State.

Rev. Alia’s unique background as a former priest turned politician brings a fresh perspective to governance, rooted in a deep sense of duty and compassion for the people. As he continues to lead the state, his dedication to service and commitment to transparency and accountability will undoubtedly shape the future of Benue State for the better.
