Moscow has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Iran’s nuclear programme, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with Iranian news agency IRNA on Tuesday.

Peskov emphasized the strategic importance of Russia’s ties with Iran, stating that Moscow seeks to strengthen cooperation across various sectors.

“Iran support includes providing assistance in dealing with important matters like the nuclear programme,” he said, adding that diplomatic efforts remain the preferred approach for resolving international concerns, provided all parties show the necessary political will.

The 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) saw Iran agree to nuclear restrictions in exchange for sanctions relief from world powers. However, in 2018, then-U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal, leading to renewed sanctions and Iran’s gradual reduction of nuclear commitments.
