During the 2024 budget defense session, the Senate expressed dismay over the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) spending more on feeding its 900 dogs than the 81,000 inmates.

Chairman Adams Oshiomhole questioned the NCS’s allocation, revealing they spend N800 daily per dog and N750 per inmate. Oshiomhole emphasized the inhuman treatment, stating that prisoners, many awaiting trial, are underfed.

The NCS Comptroller General, Haliru Nababa, defended the budget, seeking a daily feeding cost increase for inmates. Oshiomhole called for transparency on costs and criticized the government’s past policies, emphasizing the need for correctional facilities to focus on rehabilitation, not dehumanization.
