Police investigating tragedy at North York residential complex
A six-year-old Nigerian girl has died after falling from a high-rise apartment building in Toronto, in an incident that has left residents of the community in shock.
The tragedy occurred on Chalkfarm Drive in the North York area of the city, near Jane Street, at about 8:15 p.m., according to local authorities.
Police said officers responded to reports of “unknown trouble” before discovering the child unresponsive on the ground outside the residential complex.
Residents described the girl as energetic and familiar within the building community, with many struggling to come to terms with her death.
“She used to come here all the time and play… she was a lively kid. It’s very, very sad,” one neighbour told CP24.
Another resident said the child was a regular presence in the area and often seen during morning school runs.
“It’s crazy that I will never see this child again. I see her every morning. It’s heartbreaking,” the neighbour said.
According to residents, the girl had reportedly been staying with a family friend living on the building’s top floor while her mother was in Nigeria.
The circumstances surrounding the fall have raised questions among residents, particularly regarding the building’s window safety features. Several neighbours noted that the windows are fitted with mechanisms designed to prevent them from opening fully.
“To be fair, they do have precautions on these windows to make sure these things don’t happen,” one resident said.
Another added that the windows are bolted, contributing to uncertainty about how the incident occurred.
The property management company, Greenwin, described the incident as “deeply saddening” and expressed condolences to the child’s family.
In a statement, the company said emergency services responded quickly and confirmed it is cooperating fully with investigators. It declined to comment on the maintenance or inspection history of the windows, citing the ongoing police inquiry.
Authorities in Toronto said the case does not currently appear suspicious, though investigations remain ongoing pending autopsy results.
