In a closely watched election, the Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, has been declared the Senator-elect for Sokoto South Senatorial District. Tambuwal, who ran as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), defeated the incumbent Senator Danbaba Dambuwa with a margin of 4,976 votes.

The results were announced on Sunday morning at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Bodinga local government by the returning officer, Professor Abubakar Abdullahi Bagudo.

According to the official announcement, Tambuwal secured a total of 100,860 votes, while the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ibrahim Danbaba, garnered 95,884 votes.

Tambuwal’s victory marks a significant moment in Sokoto State’s political landscape.

As a former three-term Federal House of Representatives member representing Kebbe/Tambuwal federal constituency, where he also served as the Speaker from 2011 to 2015, Tambuwal is no stranger to the National Assembly.

However, this win allows him to return to the legislative body as a Senator representing Sokoto South Senatorial District.

Notably, Tambuwal’s journey to the Senatorial election was preceded by his withdrawal from the presidential race.

Having served his constitutional requirements of two terms as governor of Sokoto State, Tambuwal initially picked the presidential nomination form of the PDP. However, he eventually withdrew from the race in favor of fellow contestant and eventual PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

As Tambuwal prepares to take up his new role as Senator-elect, there are high expectations from his constituents and political observers alike.

His victory in the Sokoto South Senatorial District election has been seen as a significant win for the PDP in Sokoto State and is expected to shape the political landscape in the region in the coming years.
