On Tuesday, two people were killed in a tanker explosion along the Umunya Road on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.

According to reports, the tanker crashed into a gutter after the driver lost control and burst into flames.

The fatal road crash involved an unidentified driver of a Mack tanker with no registration number that was carrying PMS and an Urban shuttle Bus with no registration number.

According to eyewitnesses, the tanker driver was traveling at high speeds when he lost control and collided with the shuttle from behind, causing both vehicles to catch fire.

The incident caused panic in the area because it happened near a filling station at the popular Odumodu Junction, Umunya in Oyi Local Government Area.

It also caused a traffic jam on the already congested road.

The crash involved five male adults, two of whom were killed and one who was burned beyond recognition. Three people escaped unharmed. The men of the state fire service were on the scene and fought the fire, while passersby who trooped out in their numbers also helped. The fire department had been able to put out the fire as of the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, a team from the Federal Road Safety Corps, RS5.33 Nteje Unit Command, handed over the deceased victims to police officers from Oyi Division Nteje.

The FRSC rescue team was still on the scene, directing traffic and removing obstructions caused by the crash.

Corps Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi, the state Sector Commander, expressed condolences to the victims’ families and prayed for the deceased.

Irelewuyi warned motorists to avoid speeding and to stick to the posted speed limit.

“Speed drills but kills check your speed and not your watch. Let us keep our road safe from crash,” he warned.
