Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been appointed head coach of Bayer Leverkusen, the German champions confirmed on Monday.

The Dutch tactician takes over from Xabi Alonso, who guided Leverkusen to a historic domestic double in the 2023–24 season, winning both the Bundesliga and the German Cup. Alonso was officially unveiled on Sunday as the new manager of Real Madrid, succeeding Carlo Ancelotti.

Ten Hag, 54, arrives in Leverkusen following his departure from Manchester United in October 2024 after a turbulent two-and-a-half-year tenure. Despite winning both the League Cup and the FA Cup during his spell at Old Trafford, his time was ultimately overshadowed by inconsistent performances and underwhelming league campaigns.

Leverkusen’s decision marks a bold new chapter for the club as they look to build on Alonso’s successful era. Ten Hag is expected to bring his high-pressing, possession-based style to a squad brimming with confidence and ambition after their dominant domestic run.
