President Bola Tinubu has appointed six Chief Medical Directors (CMDs) to head federal government-owned hospitals in Akure, Gombe, Azare, Lafiya, Maiduguri, and Kafanchan. The appointments, effective for four years, underscore the administration’s commitment to improving Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure and service delivery.

In a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the newly appointed CMDs were announced alongside the respective hospitals they will lead. Among the appointments:

  • Prof. Olusegun Sylvester Ojo takes charge of the Federal Teaching Hospital in Akure, Ondo State. A seasoned medical professional, Prof. Ojo previously served as the pioneer CMD of the Ondo State Specialist Hospital.
  • Prof. Yusuf Mohammed Abdullahi has been reappointed as CMD of the Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe. His second and final term, which commenced on September 5, 2024, comes on the back of an outstanding first term that propelled the hospital’s growth.
  • Dr. Dauda Abubakar Katagum, who served in an acting capacity, is now confirmed as the substantive CMD of the Federal Teaching Hospital in Azare, Bauchi State. His tenure took effect on December 6, 2024.
  • Dr. Ikrama Hassan has been named CMD of the newly upgraded Federal Teaching Hospital in Lafiya, Nasarawa State. The consultant physician previously served as the medical director of the Dalhatu Ibrahim Arab Specialist Hospital.
  • Dr. Ali Mohammed Ramat, a renowned consultant orthopaedic and spine surgeon, is set to lead the newly established National Orthopaedic Hospital in Maiduguri, Borno State.
  • Dr. Haruna Abubakar Shehu, a consultant family physician, will head the newly established Federal Medical Centre in Kafanchan, Kaduna State.

President Tinubu congratulated the new appointees and urged them to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, accountability, and service delivery. The move is part of a broader government initiative aimed at expanding quality healthcare access for all Nigerians, reinforcing the administration’s focus on modernizing public health infrastructure across the nation.
