Despite recent tensions and harsh criticisms from former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, President Bola Tinubu has extended warm birthday wishes to him on his 65th birthday.

The relationship between El-Rufai and President Tinubu has grown strained, with the former governor openly criticizing the administration’s policies and accusing the president’s allies of engaging in tribal politics. Many believe El-Rufai’s public outbursts stem from his failed ministerial nomination last year.

However, in a statement issued on Sunday, February 16, 2025, by Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised El-Rufai as a scholar, administrator, and politician known for his “resourcefulness and brilliance.” The president acknowledged El-Rufai’s contributions to public service, highlighting his tenure as Kaduna State governor and his roles as Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory from 2003 to 2007.

President Tinubu commended El-Rufai for his commitment to democracy, his service to the nation, and his efforts in mentoring younger generations. He also recognized El-Rufai’s role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his contributions to the party’s victories in the 2015, 2019, and 2023 elections.

Concluding his message, President Tinubu wished El-Rufai good health and strength to continue serving the nation.
