President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to Chief Bisi Akande, elder statesman and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as he marked his 87th birthday.

In a special message on Thursday, Tinubu celebrated Akande’s long record of public service and commitment to democratic ideals, describing him as a key figure in Nigeria’s political evolution.

The President said Akande had made enduring contributions to the nation’s democratic development and the strengthening of its institutions.

He noted that Akande’s political philosophy was shaped by the progressive ideals of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, whose principles of integrity and selfless service he had upheld throughout his career.

Akande began his professional life as an accountant with British Petroleum before leaving the private sector for public service. He served as Secretary to the Government of the old Oyo State in 1979 and later became Deputy Governor during the Second Republic.

Tinubu recalled that Akande went on to serve as Governor of Osun State from 1999 to 2003, a period in which he distinguished himself through prudent leadership.

He also commended Akande’s role as interim national chairman of the APC, saying he laid the groundwork for the party’s historic electoral victory in 2015.

The President praised his leadership, integrity and sacrifices, describing him as a mentor whose guidance had been instrumental to his own political journey.

Tinubu added that Akande’s continued support for his administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda remained invaluable.

He noted that even at 87, the elder statesman remained a strong advocate of democracy, social justice and good governance.

The President prayed for Akande’s continued good health and renewed strength as he celebrates the milestone.
