President Bola Tinubu on Friday expressed gratitude to the people of Ibadan for backing his presidential bid, recalling the city’s role in his journey to power during his campaign in 2022.
Tinubu spoke at the coronation of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, where he congratulated the new monarch and offered prayers for his reign.
“I greet the people of Ibadan, congratulations on the coronation of your new king,” Tinubu said. “I once came to Oke Mopo to seek your support and told you ‘Emi l’okan’ (it’s my turn), and now we are there. Thank you very much.”
The president described the coronation as a “moment of history,” praying that Oba Ladoja’s reign would bring prosperity, peace, and honour to Ibadanland.
“It is my prayer that you will live long and be celebrated as one of the rare gems of history to ascend the throne of your forefathers,” Tinubu said.
He also acknowledged the presence of dignitaries at the ceremony, including former governors Donald Duke, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Ibikunle Amosun, Ibrahim Shekarau, and Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, in his remarks, described Oba Ladoja’s emergence as the 44th Olubadan as a source of pride for the ancient city.
“The succession process to the throne of Olubadan is now well established and free from contestation, and this is a source of pride for us all,” Makinde said. “It is my prayer that the reign of Oba Adewolu Ladoja will usher in lasting peace, unity, and greater progress for Ibadanland and Oyo State as a whole.”
