US President Donald Trump confirmed Friday that he will miss the wedding of his son, Donald Trump Jr., citing pressing government responsibilities in Washington.
Trump had already hinted a day earlier that the ongoing Iran conflict made it “bad timing” to attend the ceremony, where Trump Jr. is set to marry Bettina Anderson in the Bahamas this weekend.
“While I very much wanted to be with my son, Don Jr., and the newest member of the Trump Family, his soon to be wife, Bettina, circumstances pertaining to Government, and my love for the United States of America, do not allow me to do so,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
“I feel it is important for me to remain in Washington, D.C., at the White House during this important period of time. Congratulations to Don and Bettina!”
The White House later revised Trump’s weekend schedule, announcing that he would no longer travel to his golf resort in New Jersey and would instead remain in the US capital.
Although Trump did not elaborate on what made the period particularly critical, the decision comes as diplomatic efforts surrounding the Middle East conflict appear to be entering a decisive stage. Iran is currently reviewing a new US proposal, while Pakistan’s powerful army chief is reportedly heading to Tehran as part of mediation efforts.
At the same time, tensions are also escalating between Washington and Cuba. The United States has intensified pressure on the communist-run island by indicting former Cuban leader Raul Castro.
The US military has also deployed an aircraft carrier and accompanying warships to the Caribbean, signaling heightened regional security concerns.
