Passengers bound for China on United Airlines flight UA198 faced a major delay after the pilot’s forgotten passport forced the plane to turn back mid-flight. Tracking data revealed that the Boeing 787, carrying 270 passengers, was en route from Los Angeles to Shanghai when it made an unexpected U-turn over the Pacific, heading to San Francisco for a crew change.

United Airlines confirmed on Tuesday that the diversion was necessary “as the pilot did not have their passport onboard.” The airline arranged for a replacement crew to continue the journey later that evening, while passengers were offered meal vouchers and compensation for the inconvenience.

Despite the setback, the aircraft eventually landed at Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport after midnight, approximately six hours behind schedule. The incident unfolded amid a global travel environment already disrupted by operational challenges, including a recent shutdown at London’s Heathrow Airport due to a power outage.

This unusual mishap highlights the critical importance of ensuring all crew documentation is in order before takeoff, and adds to the growing list of travel disruptions affecting passengers worldwide.
