Tension gripped Enugu as gunmen abducted Dr. Orockarrah Orock, a resident doctor at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH). Dr. Orock was kidnapped while on duty at the Anaesthesia Department within the hospital premises.

However, he managed to escape from his abductors near Four-Corners Junction, Enugu-Port Harcourt highway, with the help of vigilante operatives.

The abduction was reportedly linked to the halt in food supply to the hospital by vendors due to non-payment by the hospital management, forcing medical staff to venture outside for meals at their own risk.

The incident caused anxiety among hospital workers. The gunmen entered the hospital premises, concealed themselves near the Catholic chapel, and pursued Dr. Orock as he was leaving his duty post.

Uchelue Boniface, the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed Dr. Orock’s escape, stating that he had been rescued and would soon be reunited with his family. The hospital management had previously informed the workers of the abduction and sought their cooperation to ensure the hospital’s smooth operation.

Dr. Chinazom Ekwueme, the President of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), expressed relief at Dr. Orock’s safety and mentioned ongoing efforts to bring the abductors to justice. The police are also involved in the investigation.

The Enugu State Police spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, stated that he was not yet briefed on the matter when contacted.
