The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has expressed hope that the lingering lecturers’ strike will be resolved soon, stating that they see “light at the end of the tunnel”.
As a result of the back-and-forth with the Federal Government, universities across the country have been closed since February.
However, during a meeting with House Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, ASUU President Prof Emmanuel Osodeke stated: “For the first time, we have seen light at the end of the tunnel.”
The Speaker had hinted at the meeting that ASUU’s long-running strike would be called off “in a matter of days.”
In response to the appellate court’s order that public university lecturers return to classrooms, he hinted that the strike would be resolved outside of the courtroom.
Since February 14, the Federal Government and ASUU have been at odds over demands for proper funding of the university educational system to global standards.
