Tony Elumelu, Chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, Heirs Holdings Group, and Transnational Corporation (Transcorp) Plc, has emphasised the crucial role that adequate knowledge of Nigeria’s population plays in accelerating economic growth and development.
Speaking at a donor engagement event in Abuja regarding Nigeria’s 2023 Housing and Population Census, Elumelu highlighted the significance of conducting the census, stating that it is critical for the country’s future.
Elumelu highlighted the relationship between population growth and development in Nigeria, which is the most populous country in Africa, with an estimated population of over 200 million people.
He stressed that without an accurate understanding of Nigeria’s population, the country cannot properly plot its developmental path, economic growth, or societal goals.
The UBA Chairman commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his efforts in organising the 2023 housing and population census.
He emphasised that credible demographic data is essential for both the public and private sector and that the census is a significant milestone in Nigeria’s development.
Elumelu urged the authorities to ensure that the census is credible, transparent, verifiable, and accessible to all citizens.
He also highlighted that the census figures would serve as a vital tool for policymakers, private sector actors, and civil society organisations in making informed decisions, driving development, and creating opportunities.
