An election observer group has issued a warning that the upcoming governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections, scheduled for Saturday, may be cancelled unless the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) complies with a recent order from the election petition tribunal.
The tribunal has prohibited INEC from tampering with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines until they have been inspected along with other documents used in the recent presidential election.
The Coalition of Civil Societies for Good Governance has stated that unless the tribunal’s order is lifted, it will be difficult for the commission to reconfigure the BVAS machines for the elections.
The group has called on INEC and other stakeholders to address the issue and consider options such as postponing the poll, proceeding without BVAS, or seeking legal options to vacate the order.
