In a recent announcement, the Holy See has revealed that Pope Francis, aged 86, will undergo a critical operation this Wednesday afternoon to repair a hernia in his abdominal area.

The procedure, which requires a general anesthetic and an incision in the abdominal cavity, will be carried out in order to address the pontiff’s recurring pain.

Concerns have been raised about the pope’s tolerance to general anesthesia following a previous surgery in 2021 for diverticulitis, a bowel condition.

Nevertheless, Francis’ medical team deemed the operation necessary after careful consideration over the past few days.

The pope had already arrived at Gemelli Hospital earlier today, and according to Vatican sources, he is expected to remain hospitalized for several days.

Last Tuesday, he underwent a check-up at the same hospital, where he experienced recurring discomfort.

The upcoming procedure, known as laparocele in medical terms, will be conducted at Gemelli Hospital, the same facility where the pontiff received treatment for his 2021 surgery.

During that operation, part of his colon was removed, and he spent 10 days recovering in the hospital.
