In a sport traditionally dominated by men, Abigail Kwartekaa Quartey has made history as Ghana’s first female world boxing champion. The 27-year-old’s triumph over British boxer Sangeeta Birdi last November, earning the WIBF World Super Bantamweight title, marks a turning point for women in sports across Ghana.

Growing up in Accra’s Jamestown neighborhood, Quartey faced opposition from her own family and the broader community. Now, her success is inspiring a new generation of female athletes, proving that with perseverance, “what a man can do, a woman can also do.”
