The proposed bill seeking to provide for a single term of six years for the offices of the President, State Governors and Local Government Chairmen has passed through first reading at the House of Representatives.
The private member bill is being sponsored by the Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), Ikenga Ugochinyere, and 50 other lawmakers on Wednesday.
The proposed bill seeks to alter Sections 7, 135, 137, 180 and 182 subsection 1 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The bill intends to achieve a reduction in government spending and wastage, efficiency in governance, as well as national stability and for related matters.
