Over 250 Constitutional and Human Rights lawyers have called on the National Judicial Council (NJC) to direct all courts in Nigeria not to entertain cases brought before them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The lawyers have stated that this is due to the conviction of the EFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, who is seen as unfit to preside over the affairs of the law enforcement agency, especially one set up to fight corruption.

The lawyers made the call during the presentation of their annual communique on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at the end of their Annual Conference in Abuja, themed “Democracy and the Rule of Law.”

They also urged political parties in Nigeria and their candidates to adhere to the provisions of the law guiding post-election matters and avoid sponsoring crises.

The lawyers emphasized that the persistent abuse of power by public officials in Nigeria was an aberration that needed urgent attention.

The new leadership of the Judicial Integrity Lawyers (JILAW) was also announced during the conference.
