Publisher and politician Dele Momodu has sharply criticised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for zoning its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria, calling the decision “the most reckless in the history of our nascent democracy.”

In a statement posted on Instagram Tuesday, Momodu accused the opposition party of succumbing to “cheap and puerile blackmail” allegedly orchestrated by figures aligned with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“The PDP finally succumbed to the blackmail of those openly working for the ruling party,” Momodu wrote. “The shame of it was seeing seasoned politicians celebrate taking the most reckless decision in the history of our democracy.”

He linked the zoning decision to former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike and President Bola Tinubu, alleging that the arrangement effectively aligns PDP structures with Tinubu’s re-election bid. “Wike keeps belching orders at helpless governors,” he said, arguing that the former governor was “crying loudest” for southern power despite opposing zoning in 2022.

According to Momodu, “Tinubu will be the joint candidate of APC and PDP in 2027. No Jupiter will stop Wike from using PDP structures for Tinubu. That’s already a done deal.”

He dismissed speculation about possible PDP candidates such as former President Goodluck Jonathan, Peter Obi, or Oyo State governor Seyi Makinde as “blatant lies from the pit of hell.”

Momodu also accused the party of hypocrisy, citing past precedents. He recalled that when President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua died in office, no push was made to ensure the presidency remained in the North after Goodluck Jonathan completed his term. He also pointed to Tinubu’s Muslim-Muslim ticket in 2023 as another instance where zoning was sidelined.

“The hypocrisy behind zoning power to the South stinks to high heavens,” he said. “TRUTH must not be selective.”
