ADO-EKITI — The Ekiti State Government (EKSG) has declared a total ban on tobacco smoking in both private and public places across the state capital, Ado-Ekiti, as part of its efforts to curb tobacco-related health issues.

This announcement was made during the launch of the ‘World No Tobacco Day 2025’ campaign in Ado-Ekiti on Friday, held in collaboration with Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA). Themed “Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing the Tobacco Industry’s Tactics,” the event underscored the urgent need to address tobacco consumption and the deceptive practices of tobacco manufacturers.

Ekiti State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Filani Oyebanji, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Olusola Gbenga-Igotun, said the ban is a proactive measure to protect the health and well-being of residents and reduce tobacco-related illnesses.

“Tobacco use has been a leading contributor to social vices and health challenges,” Dr. Oyebanji noted. “It is essential we intensify public awareness, strengthen regulations, and establish effective cessation programs.”

He further revealed that the initiative would extend to all local government areas in Ekiti State.

Dr. Oyebanji condemned the tobacco industry’s manipulative strategies targeting young people through glossy advertisements, sweetened flavors, and social media campaigns. He warned that while companies shift to promoting alternative nicotine products like e-cigarettes and vapes as “safer,” the risks and long-term effects of these products remain concerning.

“Today, we must commit ourselves to unmasking these tactics and advocating for truth,” he said. “We must empower communities with accurate information, strengthen regulations to close loopholes, and support those on the journey to quit tobacco use.”

The Executive Director of CAPPA, Oluwafemi Akinbode, praised Ekiti State’s political will, stating that the “Smoke-Free Ekiti Project” aligns with global public health standards and will protect non-smokers from secondhand smoke while transforming social norms around tobacco use.

Chairman of Ado Local Government Area, Bosun Osaloni, lauded the efforts of the state government and CAPPA, pledging to enforce the ban and punish violators.
