Tunisian opposition leader Rached Ghannouchi, a key opponent of President Kais Saied, has been arrested by police at his home in Tunis, according to his Ennahdha party.

Ghannouchi, who was the speaker of Tunisia’s parliament before it was dissolved by Saied, has been taken to a police barracks for questioning.

His arrest comes after he allegedly made comments in which he said Tunisia would be threatened with “civil war” if political Islam, from which his party originated, were eradicated there.

The arrest of Ghannouchi is the latest in a string of opposition figures held by authorities since early February.

Critics of Saied accuse him of reinstating autocratic rule in Tunisia, the only democracy to emerge from the Arab Spring uprisings in the Middle East region over a decade ago.
