Despite the harsh economic conditions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has named Nigeria’s top-performing taxpayers for the year 2021, commending them for their exceptional efforts in contributing to the government’s ability to meet its social contract with Nigerian citizens.

The FIRS expressed gratitude to the country’s taxpayers in a press release signed by Executive Chairman Muhammad Nami, noting that without them, the Service would not have been able to achieve the feat it accomplished in 2021, when it exceeded its tax collection target for the year and crossed the N6 trillion threshold for the first time.

“The FIRS is pleased to celebrate the top-performing taxpayers who contributed to her success in 2021,” the release stated. “The Service surpassed its tax collection target in 2021, and in doing so, crossed the N6 trillion threshold for the first time.”

The Service also stated that President Muhammadu Buhari’s leadership, as well as the support of the Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning, and the National Assembly, enabled the collection of N6.405 trillion in tax revenue in 2021.

The Nigeria Liquified Petroleum Gas Company Ltd was named the Most Supportive Taxpayer, while the Nigeria National Petroleum Company was named the Highest Taxpayer on the list of top-performing taxpayers.

The revenue authority urged taxpayers to work with the FIRS to make taxation a central component of the country’s development and growth.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari was set to unveil, recognize, and award the country’s top-performing taxpayers at an exclusive dinner during the FIRS 2022 National Tax Week; however, this was canceled in honor of the victims of the unfortunate attack on the Kaduna-Abuja railway on March 28, 2022.
