Former Croatia international Nikola Pokrivac, 39, was killed on Friday evening in a four‑vehicle crash in Karlovac, central Croatia, the Croatian Football Federation confirmed on Saturday. Three of his teammates from lower‑league side NK Vojnic were also involved in the incident and remain hospitalised with serious injuries. Local reports indicate a fourth person, travelling in a separate vehicle, also lost their life.

According to police statements, the collision occurred around 9 p.m. as Pokrivac’s Volkswagen transporter was proceeding along the D1 highway. Investigators say a truck crossing into the opposing lane triggered a multi‑car pileup. Emergency crews transported the injured to Karlovac General Hospital, while Pokrivac was declared dead at the scene.

Pokrivac earned 15 caps for Croatia and was part of the squad that reached the quarter‑finals of Euro 2008. Domestically, he won three league-and‑cup doubles with Dinamo Zagreb before moving abroad to claim the Austrian Bundesliga title with RB Salzburg in 2010. After a fruitful spell with Monaco, his career was cut short in 2015 by a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Remarkably, having overcome cancer, Pokrivac returned to the pitch in 2021, joining NK Vojnic last season to mentor younger players. “Nikola was a great footballer who lived for the game until his last moment,” said Croatian Football Federation president Marijan Kustic. “He showed extraordinary courage by defeating a terrible illness and coming back stronger. His loss is deeply felt across our community.”

Teammates and club officials praised Pokrivac’s leadership on and off the field. Former colleagues recall his calm presence in midfield and his willingness to guide emerging talents at Vojnic. “He was our captain in spirit,” remarked one team member. “He taught us resilience—both in sport and in life.”

Police have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, including whether speed or driver error contributed to the tragedy. The driver of the truck remains in custody pending questioning.

Pokrivac is survived by his daughter. Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced, but the football federation has indicated it will hold a memorial ceremony in Zagreb honouring his contributions to Croatian football.

As the nation grieves, tributes have poured in from across Europe, underscoring the midfielder’s enduring legacy as both a champion on the pitch and a symbol of perseverance in the face of adversity.
