A first‑year student of the University of Ilesa, Gbolahan Ojo, has died after being electrocuted while using his mobile phone plugged into an electrical outlet during Friday’s severe thunderstorm, university and police sources confirmed.

According to an eyewitness identified as Olawale, the 100‑level Business Administration student was playing a game on his phone in his hostel near the Prototype Engineering Development Institute junction when lightning struck. “There was a sudden flash and a loud crack,” Olawale recalled. “Moments later, we found him lying beside the bed, the phone charger still plugged in.”

University Registrar Funso Ojo issued a statement describing the incident as “unfortunate and tragic,” noting that storm‑related power fluctuations likely triggered the electrocution. “Following proper protocols, we informed the police immediately. After due clearance, Gbolahan’s remains were transferred to Wesley Guild Hospital,” the registrar said.

Osun State FRSC data shows lightning‑related electrical surges are an increasing hazard during the rainy season, particularly in older dormitory blocks with exposed wiring. The police have launched a thorough investigation into the hostel’s electrical safety compliance.

Vice‑Chancellor Professor Taiwo Asaolu and senior university officials—including the Deans of Student Affairs and Management Sciences—personally received Gbolahan’s father upon his arrival in Ilesa. “The University of Ilesa stands by the family,” the statement added, pledging financial and pastoral support during their time of grief.

As students and staff grapple with the loss, campus safety committees are reviewing emergency power and grounding systems to prevent similar accidents. Meanwhile, the university community has rallied around the Business Administration Department, holding a candlelit vigil on Saturday evening in memory of the young student.
