Former Trade Union Congress (TUC) President, Peter Esele, has spoken out about the recent suspension of the fuel subsidy removal in Nigeria by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. Esele made the statement during an interview on Channels Television on Friday.

The National Economic Council announced on Thursday that the federal government had suspended the proposed fuel subsidy removal.

This move is expected to save Nigeria over N6 trillion in revenue.

However, Esele, a former president of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, stated that if the government truly wanted to phase out the fuel subsidy regime, they would have done so one year into their administration.

He went on to say that Buhari has been avoiding this issue for the last eight years and has no political will to achieve it.

According to industry data, the Buhari administration would have spent nearly N10 trillion on fuel subsidies from May 2015 to May 29, 2023
