Governor Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has stressed the importance of carefully implementing the new N70,000 minimum wage, noting that it must be accompanied by a consequential adjustment. Speaking with State House correspondents over the weekend after meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Governor Yahaya emphasized that the process requires thorough planning to ensure accuracy.
The governor revealed that Gombe State had already established a committee, headed by his deputy, to oversee the implementation of the new minimum wage. This committee, which has been in place since 2020, is working closely with labor unions and other stakeholders to navigate the complexities of the wage adjustment.
When asked about the state’s readiness to implement the new wage, Governor Yahaya affirmed that most states, including Gombe, have set up committees to facilitate the process. He reiterated that while the new wage is mandated by law, the implementation must be approached methodically to incorporate the necessary consequential adjustments.
The governor also noted that the previous minimum wage of N30,000 expired on April 18, 2024, with the expectation that the new wage and adjustments would commence by May 2024. Governor Yahaya’s comments highlight the challenges states face in rolling out the new wage structure while ensuring financial sustainability and compliance with the law.
