Fenerbahce forwards Mason Greenwood and Matteo Guendouzi are facing a UEFA disciplinary investigation following the Turkish club’s Champions League play-off victory over Lyon.

Fenerbahce confirmed that UEFA had opened proceedings against both players and the club after a heated second leg in France.

Guendouzi, who previously played for Lyon’s fierce Ligue 1 rivals Marseille, was seen making an obscene gesture towards home supporters during the warm-up and again after the final whistle.

The France international also appeared to shout “Allez l’OM” — meaning “Go Marseille” — towards the Lyon fans.

Guendouzi later said supporters had insulted his family during the match.

Tensions boiled over after the final whistle when a person wearing Lyon colours confronted the midfielder, triggering a confrontation involving several players in the tunnel.

Greenwood, who also played for Marseille before joining Fenerbahce, was among those caught up in the post-match scenes.

“UEFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings against our players Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood, as well as against our club,” Fenerbahce said.

The Turkish side said it would submit its defence and supporting documents to UEFA while monitoring the case.

It remains unclear whether UEFA’s disciplinary body will reach a decision before Fenerbahce begin their Champions League league-phase campaign next Thursday.

Fenerbahce will host Roma in their opening league-phase fixture, before travelling to England to face Aston Villa on 14 October.

The club reached the Champions League league phase for the first time since the 2008-09 season after beating Lyon 3-2 on aggregate.

Greenwood joined Fenerbahce from Marseille during the summer in a €39 million transfer.
