Pep Guardiola has called Kevin De Bruyne one of the best players to ever play in the Premier League, just as the midfielder confirmed he may leave Manchester City at the end of the season.
Speaking on Friday, Guardiola praised De Bruyne for everything he’s done since joining City in 2015 from Wolfsburg for £55 million. “He’s one of the best midfielders to ever play in England and for this club. No doubt,” Guardiola said. “He’s been part of every trophy we’ve won.”
Now 33, De Bruyne has been a huge part of City’s success, helping them win 14 major trophies, including six league titles and the Champions League in 2023. In 413 games, he’s scored 106 goals and assisted 174 others, showing his sharp eye for creating chances.
But injuries have taken a toll in recent seasons. He missed five months last year with a hamstring injury and has only started 21 of 47 games this season.
Still, Guardiola pointed out that De Bruyne was incredibly consistent during his prime. “Aside from the recent injuries, he’s been there every three days—big games or small ones,” he said. “His passing, goals, and vision are tough to replace.”
Guardiola also believes De Bruyne will go down in City history alongside legends like Vincent Kompany, David Silva, and Sergio Aguero, all of whom have statues at the Etihad. “I’d bet a lot of money it’ll happen. He deserves it,” he said.
It’s still unclear whether De Bruyne will leave at the end of the league season or stay for the Club World Cup. His contract ends in June, and the Club World Cup runs from June 14 to July 13. “Good question—I don’t know,” Guardiola admitted. “He has to decide. It depends on his plans and what the club wants to do.”
As fans wait to see what comes next, Guardiola’s words highlight just how much Kevin De Bruyne has meant to City and the Premier League.
