Romelu Lukaku will miss Napoli’s opening Serie A fixture after sustaining a thigh injury that could sideline him for several months, the Italian champions confirmed on Monday.

The 32-year-old striker tore his left thigh muscle during last Thursday’s pre-season friendly against Olympiakos. While the club described the injury as “serious,” they did not specify a recovery timeline. Italian media, however, report that Lukaku may be unavailable until November and could require surgery.

Napoli begin their title defence away to newly promoted Sassuolo on Saturday.

Lukaku played a pivotal role in Napoli’s championship run last season under Antonio Conte, scoring 14 goals and providing 10 assists in Serie A.
