Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems is set to unveil its cutting-edge Lite Beam laser defense system at the AUSA military exhibition in Washington, D.C., from October 14 to 16. Although not as groundbreaking as its predecessor, the Iron Beam, Lite Beam is a significant addition to Israel’s layered air defense capabilities, particularly in short-range defense.

The Lite Beam boasts impressive capabilities, including engagement at the speed of light, an unlimited magazine, and negligible cost per interception. It is designed to counter drones, drone swarms, and potentially mortars, while the Iron Beam is capable of taking down hostile missiles, mortars, and rockets.

Israel’s laser air defense system works in conjunction with other components, such as the Iron Dome, to provide comprehensive protection. The Iron Dome intercepts short-range missiles and medium- and long-range missiles, while the Iron Beam serves as the short-range component of the Israeli integrated missile defense system.

The introduction of Lite Beam is timely, given the proliferation of drones in the region and the increased volatility. With the Iron Beam expected to be delivered to the IDF by 2025, Israel will soon have two laser-based air defense systems to bolster its existing arsenal.

Rafael’s executive vice president and general manager of the Land & Naval Systems Division, Tzvi Marmor, emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering advanced battlefield defense solutions. “As global threats evolve, we continue to equip armed forces with cutting-edge technologies to ensure their operational superiority in diverse and challenging environments.”
