Commissioner of Police in Kano State, Mr Mohammed Gumel, shared insights on the successful arrest of 1,000 suspected criminals within three months of his deployment. In an interview with newsmen, Gumel attributed the achievement to community policing, inter-agency collaboration, and kinetic measures.

Gumel highlighted the significance of sensitizing the public to see the police as allies in the fight against crime. He engaged with traditional and religious institutions, as well as private sector representatives, to garner support for community policing.

The commissioner emphasized strategic crime mapping to address emerging crimes, including armed robbery, phone snatching, and disturbances in various locations. The deployment of kinetic approaches led to the arrest and investigation of hardened criminals, with over 1,000 suspects prosecuted within the first three months.

Gumel underscored the collaboration with the judiciary to ensure effective prosecution. Discussions with the legal team focused on charging suspects with armed robbery, a non-bailable offence, instead of lesser charges. This approach resulted in the detention of the prosecuted suspects pending trial.

Additionally, miscreants who willingly surrendered were offered amnesty and special employment as constabularies to assist in crime prevention. The CP expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Civil Defence in maintaining peace and security in Kano State.

Gumel’s comprehensive strategy, including community engagement, legal collaboration, and employment opportunities for former miscreants, contributed to a significant reduction in crime, making Kano a more secure and peaceful environment.
