The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, has called for the collaboration of communities to enhance the success of anti-smuggling operations. In a statement issued by the National Public Relations Officer of the service, Abdullahi Maiwada, Adeniyi reiterated the NCS’s commitment to conducting anti-smuggling operations without casualties and fostering positive community relations.
Responding to reports of an incident in the Jibia Border Area of Katsina State where a teenager was allegedly crushed by customs operatives, Adeniyi urged the public to adhere to government directives and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and security in communities.
The NCS, Federal Operations Unit, Zone B, dismissed claims that its operatives caused the accident, stating that it occurred when a J5 bus driver, attempting to evade customs operatives, collided with bystanders, resulting in injuries to a teenager. The NCS assured the public that the matter would be appropriately handled, with the driver in police custody pending further investigation.
Adeniyi expressed gratitude for the ongoing cooperation from border communities and appealed for calmness during the investigation. The statement emphasized the collaborative efforts required to address challenges and promote safety and prosperity for all stakeholders.
