The Lagos State House of Assembly has called on relevant ministries, departments, and agencies to enforce safety laws to protect lives and property.
This is coming after a recent gas explosion in the Ajeromi/Ifelodun local government area of Lagos which led to fatalities.
During plenary, the House, which was presided over by the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, mandated two ministries; the Physical Planning and Urban Development as well as Special Duties, to live up to their responsibilities so as to ensure that lives are protected against the sale of inflammable substances in residential areas.
A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Eromosele Ebhomele, said the House, which condemned the spread of gas dispensing shops across the state, warned the Lagos State Safety Agency not to compromise on the enforcement of laws regulating the activities of such outlets.
A recent gas explosion had led to the death of 15 residents with at least 35 others sustaining injuries.
The House also urged the government to support the victims with relief materials.
Obasa sympathised with the affected constituents, stressing the need to address the issue, noting that gas regulation falls under the ‘exclusive list’.
