Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has jokingly admitted he is “afraid” ahead of his side’s looming encounter with Nigeria, warning that the Super Eagles pose a tougher attacking threat than in previous meetings.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Mahrez praised Nigeria’s firepower at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, noting that the team is stronger going forward than the side Algeria faced during their 2019 AFCON triumph.
“I’m afraid (laughs). They scored a lot of goals in this competition,” the winger said, stressing that Algeria must be fully prepared to progress.
Mahrez added that the clash is likely to be more open than Algeria’s last outing against DR Congo, a scenario he believes will suit both sides’ attacking quality.
“We expect the next match to be more open, which will give us more space to showcase our abilities, and we must be fully prepared,” he said.
The former Manchester City star dismissed comparisons with Algeria’s 2019 semi-final win over Nigeria, pointing out that both teams have evolved significantly.
“This match against Nigeria will be very different from the one in 2019. Different players, different styles, different journeys,” he noted.
Mahrez also confirmed that the tournament will be his final AFCON, revealing his desire to end his international career on a high.
“This will be my last AFCON. I really want to win it again with this generation,” the 34-year-old said.
Nigeria and Algeria will face off with a place in the semi-finals at stake, as two continental heavyweights renew their rivalry.
