Lionel Messi may not see out his full contract at Inter Miami, with reports emerging that the Argentine star is considering a move to a more competitive league before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to journalist Esteban Edul, negotiations over a contract extension have stalled, even though Messi’s current deal, signed in 2023, runs until the end of 2025 and includes an option for an extra year. That clause remains inactive for now.
At 36, Messi is reportedly assessing his options carefully, particularly as Argentina look to defend their world title on North American soil. The idea of re-entering top-tier competition for the final six months leading up to the tournament is now under serious consideration.
The speculation comes in the wake of Inter Miami’s 4–0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain, a result that has reignited concerns about the level of Major League Soccer (MLS) and whether it offers Messi the competitive edge needed for one last major international push.
Still, both Messi and Inter Miami appear publicly committed to the current arrangement. Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano cited sources close to the club, stating:
“Leo is under contract until the end of 2025. The reality is that both parties are interested in continuing the relationship. The necessary steps are being taken with the right mindset to make it happen.”
Yet, the allure of higher competition and preparation for 2026 may prove persuasive.
A major factor complicating the decision is Messi’s family, who are reportedly thriving in the U.S. Journalist Guillem Balague told BBC Sport that the Messi household is “in a good place” after a difficult two-year stint in Paris. His wife Antonella is collaborating with major brands like Tiffany & Co. and Adidas, while the couple’s three sons play in youth football teams across Miami — games that Messi often attends.
“If his family are happy, then so is Messi,” Balague noted.
Whether that happiness can outweigh footballing ambition in the lead-up to a potentially historic final World Cup run remains the open question. As 2026 approaches, every step Messi takes will be scrutinised — not just for club implications, but for what they mean for his enduring legacy in the game.
