Spanish tennis icon Rafael Nadal, aged 37, announced his withdrawal from the Australian Open after revealing a “micro tear on a muscle,” dashing hopes for a triumphant return.

Despite a successful comeback in Brisbane, Nadal expressed positivity but cited his unpreparedness for five-set matches. The setback may mark the end of his Melbourne Park era, as Nadal hinted at a possible farewell to the tour in 2024.

Nadal, plagued by injuries throughout his illustrious career, emphasized the need for optimal health in deciding his future on the court. His absence raises speculation about his potential last appearance at the Australian Open.

Meanwhile, world number one Novak Djokovic faces injury concerns but remains optimistic about his readiness for the Grand Slam.

In a social media post, Nadal expressed gratitude for the support, acknowledging the disappointment of missing out on competing in front of Melbourne crowds.

His ranking dropped to 672 during his injury hiatus, while Djokovic surpassed him in Grand Slam titles, securing 24 championships.
