The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, says the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is strengthening global defence partnerships to enhance operational readiness and modernise its fleet.

Abubakar made this known during a week-long working visit to China, where he led a high-level delegation to top aviation and defence companies in Beijing, Haerbin and Chengdu. The engagements, according to NAF spokesperson Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, focused on technology transfer, maintenance support and training opportunities for Nigerian personnel.

A major highlight was Abubakar’s meeting with the China National Aero-Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC) in Beijing on August 25, where discussions centred on sustaining the serviceability of platforms already in Nigeria’s fleet. The parties reportedly reached fresh agreements on timely spare parts supply, enhanced after-sales support and expanded training programmes.

The delegation also inspected the Z-20 utility helicopter at Haerbin Aircraft Company and visited Chengdu’s JF-17 manufacturing facility, where they assessed the JF-17B prototype and undertook simulator flights.

“What we have seen here is a demonstration of China’s advancement, about exploring avenues for technology transfer and industrial cooperation that will directly impact our fleet modernisation and long-term self-reliance,” Abubakar said.

The CAS further underscored the importance of drones in modern warfare after touring the AVIC Unmanned Aerial Systems Company, noting that unmanned platforms are increasingly shaping the future of air operations.

“Our engagement here is critical to improving our Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance capabilities, which are essential for counterterrorism and internal security operations back home,” he added.

Ejodame said the visit reinforced Nigeria’s defence diplomacy in Asia and reaffirmed its position as a reliable partner in global security cooperation.
